$30,000,000,000 per Year
My Thoughts: So why is there a picture of a farm on my page about welfare? Originally, I planned to have a page regarding welfare reform, but I was recently shocked to learn that the federal government hands out twice the amount of money in farm subsidies than it does to families receiving welfare. Over half of these subsidies go to large commercial farms. Farm subsidy recipients include Fortune 500 companies, members of Congress, and multi-millionaires. Farm subsidies were needed back in the 1930's - today they are just glorified entitlements.
As for our welfare system and for that matter our unemployment system, I do support helping those who have needs. We do need to have minimum expectations for welfare recipients and even the unemployed who want to receive benefits such as being drug free and having completed high school. I have even thought about changing unemployment and welfare to be a matching benefit meaning that we will match every dollar a person earns up to a certain amount instead of just sending a no strings attached check every 2 weeks. We are close to having more people in the wagon than we have pulling it.
Struggle points as I understand them:
Members of Congress are not willing to do the right thing and eliminate loop holes which allows "non-needy" recipients from receiving these subsidies.
Welfare and Unemployment benefits that do not encourage work.
Americans wanting to do what is right, to earn a living but are discouraged.
I support:
Elimination of farm, oil, green energy, and all other subsidies which work against Capitalism. Having said this, I also support trade tariffs to prevent foreign companies from having a competitive edge and to encourage foreign companies to invest in production facilities here. As for welfare and unemployment recipients, I support drug testing and having a high school diploma or GED to qualify.
Let's bring our jobs back home - let's get back to work!
